Making a Case for Hybrid GFRP-Steel Reinforcement System in Concrete Beams: An Overview

Ageing concrete infrastructures are known to be facing deterioration, especially regarding the corrosion of their reinforcing steel. As a solution, glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP) bars now considered reinforcement alternative conventional steel, and design codes exist for designing GFRP-RC structures. However, there is need improve on addressing limited yield in GFRPs. Consequently, it suggested that hybrid steel–GFRP RC system can enhance mechanical performance flexure beams up required standard and, at same time, address durability concerns steel-only beams. This overview presents studies conducted GFRP–steel by reviewing analytical models proposed various aspects design. The consider effects such as ductility, crack width, shear, physical thermal stability when exposed temperature. Though evidence reviewed supports viability much still area research, highlighted future outlook.
